Thanks for the reference. My LANG setting is en_US.ISO8859-1 and I
use pretty standard TrueType fonts. In my case the problem that your
method has overcome is that text in an unspecified font came out
absolutely tiny (invisible in ghostview, barely visible in a 1200dpi
printout).
