That requires access to the remote systems sshd which I do not always have.

Why is that a problem? You forward multiple channels then - or not?

I doubt that - the XPrint documentation says that 'Xprt is just
another Xserver'.
I CC.ed the XPrint list - maybe the gurus there can help with that.
