Pre RH-7.3 comes to mind. In RHL-7.3 they created a symlink /etc/init.d 
-> /et/rc.d/init.d preparing for the full switch.

That's my suggestiong for a fix too. create that symlink if the system 
doesn't have/use /etc/init.d
