Well, yes, this starts to make sense when you conisder that this is
rather X-side of things.

Exactly. Even more: it would solve lots of problems.
The Xdefaults style model configs will probably never be properly
maintained by anyone (Xprint packagers, printer vendors, end users...)
They currently contain configs for only a miniscule amount of printers.
Using them at all requires manual printer->model mapping on each client
system.
That mapping requires changes in a config file located in /usr.
At the same time, PPD info is already there, reachable through the CUPS
API, and it's always current.
It is fully centralisable, that is, there can be a single
organization-wide CUPS server, and all CUPS clients get the current PPD
descriptors from that server along with printer lists. And the jobs will
be submitted to that server's central spool.
It's just so much a pity that Xprint cannot use all those easily
accessible goodies...
