I am working for IBM Austria AIX Base Support. At the moment, I am evaluating/implementing Xprint for AIX53 for a complex Migration Project. At your Webpage, http://xprint.mozdev.org/releases/ I found the following starting line: We initially release builds on the Linux x86 platform; Solaris, HP-UX and AIX ship with Xprint's server side by default, so you do not need to download or build your own Xprint server on these platforms. I cannot verify this statement, because I have only found XPConfig and libXp.a comming with AIX Base Filesets. Do I have to build the Xprt Server Side from the sources? AFAIK there may be a a very small gap (e.g. race condition) at boot time between the print spooler and the Xprint server - if the spooler isn't fast enougth and the Xprint server comes up in parallel then it may not see the print queues (you can verify this via doing a % /etc/init.d/xprint stop ; /etc/init.d/xprint start # sequence to restart the Xprint server (or use the "xprehashprinterlist" tool (which doesn't require a server restart))). ---- Bye, Roland -- __ . . __ (o.\ \/ /.o) roland.mainz@nrubsig.org \__\/\/__/ MPEG specialist, C&&JAVA&&Sun&&Unix programmer /O /==\ O\ TEL +49 641 7950090 (;O/ \/ \O;) From roland.mainz at nrubsig.org Wed Jan 19 03:57:41 2005 From: roland.mainz at nrubsig.org (Roland Mainz) Date: Tue Jan 18 22:01:38 2005 Subject: [Xprint] printing PCL References: <16774.45355.730784.356124@gromit.timing.com> Message-ID: <41EDCCA5.346BD432@nrubsig.org> John E Hein wrote: > > x.org 6.8.1 > I copied the HPLJ4050-PS model configuration to HPLJ4050-PCL5 and > changed instances of "POSTSCRIPT 2" to "PCL 5". > > When I start Xprt, I get: > > No matching visual for __GLcontextMode with visual class = 1 (32774), nplanes = 8 > No matching visual for __GLcontextMode with visual class = 2 (32773), nplanes = 8 > No matching visual for __GLcontextMode with visual class = 4 (32770), nplanes = 8 > No matching visual for __GLcontextMode with visual class = 4 (32770), nplanes = 8 > No matching visual for __GLcontextMode with visual class = 4 (32770), nplanes = 8 > No matching visual for __GLcontextMode with visual class = 4 (32770), nplanes = 8 > No matching visual for __GLcontextMode with visual class = 5 (32771), nplanes = 8 > No matching visual for __GLcontextMode with visual class = 5 (32771), nplanes = 8 > No matching visual for __GLcontextMode with visual class = 5 (32771), nplanes = 8 > No matching visual for __GLcontextMode with visual class = 5 (32771), nplanes = 8 > No matching visual for __GLcontextMode with visual class = 0 (32775), nplanes = 8 That's not fatal, it's just a warning that the GL engine can't find matching GL visuals for those X11 visuals. > > When I try to print (xphelloworld), I get: > > xphelloworld: Error: no DPI set (or no default DPI provided by server) while trying to print. Thanks for the reply. I reported in a later email that I tried the following (with the resolution entry you described for the model): =========== HPLJ4050-PCL5.default-printer-resolution: 600 ... in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xserver/C/print/attributes/document =========== But I still got the same error message and no print. Maybe 600 is not supported - I could try a different value, but I'd only be guessing at what might be supported. I didn't see any error messages about that specifically, however, and didn't crack the source yet. That said, I haven't looked to see if there have been updates in CVS since I tried this in October. I'll try the 'resolution' option to xphelloworld and report back how that goes and maybe try alternate res. values. > > Is printing to PCL supposed to be working? > > The answer is somewhere between "yes" and "no". It shouldn't have anything to do with Xprint. It would be a mozilla problem, and shouldn't stop the page from being printed anyway. Have you got any other Persian web pages you can test against, or do they all fail to print the same way? Xprint gets the printer list from the underlying printer spool (via lpstat or lpc). You'll need to set that up first (LPRng, CUPS or whatever. I find CUPS easier.) This proved to be difficult, since all I can print is blank pages. The printer I use is a Canon ir3300i, so it should handle postscript level 2. Sending a regular postscript file to the printer works perfectly. Using the "xp_ps_spooldir_tmp_Xprintjobs" and selecting "print to file" on my test page [1] generates a postscript file [2] that displays ok in gv. Sending the postscript file to the printer using lpr makes the printer spit out a blank sheet of paper. Since I suspected that the problem was related to the fonts, I edit the postscript file by hand and remove the font definitions in it, resulting in [3]. The edited file print the text, but the resulting page is not formatted correctly. If I try the same procedure with [4], the result is different. The original file [5] prints a blank page, as does the edited file [6]. I suspect that this is because the printer doesn't have the font that is specified in the postscript file. Removing the font definitions was done with the command: $ vim -c "g/BeginFont/.,/EndFont/d" \ -c "wq test-txt-edited.ps" test-txt-orig.ps I hope someone can make sense out of this problem and help me fix it. [2] is pinted using Courier for the main text and Times-Roman for the header and footer. [5] was printed using Times-Roman for everything. I noticed in the edited versions, [3] and [6], you left the font selection the same.
